UN Gay Rights Resolution

Creating history, United Nations has passed its first ever resolution defending the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered persons as human rights. Here, Here and Here.

It should be shamefully noted that Pakistan (along with other Muslim countries) opposed the resolution, and said that gay rights have "nothing to do with fundamental human rights."

It should also be noted that a similar resolution in favor of gay rights in UN was unable to be passed in 2003 because of opposition from Muslim block.

Islamic societies tend to be extremely anti-gay.

I'm glad this resolution was passed.

Ashamed that Pakistan voted against it, but glad that it finally passed.

glad. glad it got passed and the muslim bloc wasn't able to stop it. the UN fails a lot, or we fail it a lot, as Kennedy said, but a symbolic victory is a victory nevertheless.

Very happy about this. A small victory for the forces of civilization. We shouldn't lose sight of just how barbaric much of the world is, and these kinds of top-down resolutions are hugely important to force people to change.

I just watched the movie 'Priest'. Reading this post and the comments, i feel like its a continuity of the same subject, but a different topic. A parallel universe, that is disgusting, repulsive, revolting, unscrupulous & immoral. Homosexuals...just the word sends filthy, nauseating signals to the brain; let alone dwell into the subject. So, let me get this straight...u ppl are glad that animals have been given rights of being humans?? It must be some parallel universe

Without God , its a lost world. I don't need to read the bible on this issue. Since sexuality is diverse and no definition can be placed on what is proper or not, let's also give rights to those who like sex with animals rather than discriminate. Just because the powerful and rich rule at UN, it does not give them the right to be our moral conscience.

@Anonymous

If you compare homosexuality to bestiality, it shows how little you actually know about the matter!

@awais, why wud anyone want to probe the disgusting, immoral subject. All broadly come under 'sexual perversions and paraphilia'. Dissociating or defragmenting the perversions may be of interest to certain ppl of certain mentality, or an obligation (yeah, i had to study it during my third yr med college..yucks). But bestiality and homosexuality are the same. Period

Really, Mr. Aftab. Kudos. Another defeat for the fundo's. Rejoice.
Tell me one thing. If homosexuality was not a taboo but an established practice commended by religion. what would you have said then. Tell me Mr. Awais, what if the world disbelieved. what if, as you surely wish now, the whole world worshipped logic and rationale. Tell me, can you guarantee you would not have opposed it. can you Guarantee me that in that world yo would not have turned against logic? Can you guarantee me. can you guarantee yourself, Mr. Aftab. Is your struggle really what you give out it is? Do you not lie to yourself?

You will surely respond now, i can see your response.
But if you'd understood my point you would respond but not to justify yourself. There is a language beyond this one, Mr. Blogger. Learn it.
Remember you cried just after you were born, You are still that infant. We all are.

Awais, your blog gets visited by some seriously messed up people. They're only making fools of themselves, obviously, but in the process they are also being quite abusive. Do you think a banning may be in order? Not that I want to tell you how to run your blog (just making a suggestion).

It's painful as well as shameful when it becomes obvious that people refuse to understand straight and simple facts in life. For example, the adamant refusal to acknowledge that homosexuality is a natural sexual trait in human beings. And as if pain and shame is not enough, poking the blind stick of religion to see and judge who is moral or immoral in such matters hardly helps in developing a mature standpoint on issues.

If we believe that healthy and beautiful love-relationships in human beings bear the characteristics of kindness, affection, love, sympathy and sexual bonding, and if these qualities are valued and are morally right, then how exactly does one dare argue that homosexuals are a moral blotch? As is generally understood and imagined by pervert minds, it would help to know that homosexuality is not only about sex always but also about a natural way of life among two normal people (who happen to love each other and bond and are of same sex). Sam "the Pure" equates such a love and bonding to paraphilia and bestiality. I wonder if reflecting beautiful human sentiments in bonds can be justifiably equated to paraphilia or bestiality or any such junk of a philosophy, unless one has permanently lost his 'moral' marbles and thinks so. And, as a timely reminder let it be known that unlike Religion oftentimes in the world, homosexuality has never caused any harm, damage, humiliation, downfall, subjugation or ruin either of humanity or its psyche. It can rather be rightly said that it was homosexuals who always unfairly suffered.

Something is deeply amiss when people talk so ignorantly and dangerously and are oblivious to the damaging effect of their words uttered. And the chutzpah they show in their fallacious arguments, goodness! It would therefore do well to enlighten the dissenting voices on this blog that it is of great importance to unclog one's intolerant and dogmatic mind of superstitions (sexual or otherwise) that have no foundation in reality, even if they originate from 'Haloed Books' or from one's own sunken and pervert imagination that parades under the garb of righteous morality or from one's cowardice that impedes progress. One has a moral duty to change one's stand immediately when a more tolerant and rational point of view is encountered and tallies with facts in life. And most importantly, there is no point remaining happy being a discordant imbecile as that would amount to stupidity. Let me end this with an edifying quote:

Youth ages, immaturity is outgrown, ignorance can be educated, and drunkenness sobered, but stupid lasts forever." - Aristophanes.

Very eloquently expressed, Rekhaa!

Komal, I have trying to grapple with the same problem, and am not really sure how to handle it. Banning would be easy, but I am unsure what's the right way to go about it.

@ Sam

If you think homosexuality is a sexual perversion, you are at minimum 30 years behind the well-established facts in mainstream psychology and psychiatry, so you better go and brush up your knowledge rather than reveal your ignorance. [In fact, the homosexual "identity" and the associated homophobia is pretty recent 19th century invention, if we are to believe Foucault. In previous times, such as in ancient Greek, the "normality" of homosexuality was hardly ever questioned.]

oh, mr. blogger.
have you never questioned yourself.
??????????
While pointing out other's bias, has it never occurred to you, you were being led by the very same bias to this very act....

Mr. lived questioning myself,

I am more aware of my biases and motivations than you imagine me to be. However, I do not even feel the need to explain myself to you in this regard: rude anonymous commentator who has the discourtesy to throw an ad hominem at me and challenge my state of self-reflection with the presumption that you know me better than I know myself. You don't deserve a response.
