Evolution

Sarah and Asra know their marriage is unorthodox, and the idea of a gay nikah would be rejected by the majority of Muslim scholars, but Sarah says it is nobody's business.

"It is between me and God..."
"Same-sex nikahs are still a contentious issue, but all I can say is I have done it, and I am completely comfortable and content with my faith..."

This is one of the ways in which Islam can evolve: by allowing individual freedom in interpretation and practice.

I don't quite get it. I am all in favor of gay marriages, but I don't quite understand their need to mold some religion which clearly does not allow gay marriages.

It's perfectly fine to be religious and gay. But I can't understand how they can do something forbidden by a certain ideology (or religion) and still try to fit into that ideology.

I also find it a bit strange, to be honest. I can't relate to the need to force a traditional religion to fit modernity this way. I wouldn't oppose it, out of solidarity with lesbians, but I do find it strange and somewhat unbecoming.

I guess these guys view their religion to define a philosophy of life for them. They use it successfully to navigate most spheres of their lives and hence their need to adapt it to the sphere of marriage. I think Awais is right when he calls for flexibility in interpretation.

There's a reason why two genders exist instead of one. Now that even Muslims are embracing this "revolutionary" idea of gay marriages, I think it's about time we all start believing this is the ultimate death of humanity.

I still why everyone has suddenly decided to become gay. Where were the gays in all the history of humanity?

Panda, I would encourage you to read "Homosexuality and Civilization", or "Biological Exuberance"/"Animal Homosexuality". All evidence indicates that homosexuality is a normal behavior and sexual variation found throughout human history and in animal species as well. It's just being talked about more openly now -- as a behavior and sexual variation it has been there from the beginning.

By the way, there are also intersexed people -- people who are strictly speaking neither truly male nor female.

Do you have any empirical -- social scientific -- evidence to back up your claims?

The thing I find interesting about this piece of news is all the questions it raises.
Can religion truly ever transcend its dogma? In the case of Islam, the dogma expressly forbids homosexuality and while in many instances reformists have tried to traverse dogma and interpret it in new and individual strains, where does one draw the line between just making stuff up.

I am all for gay marriages, but marriage is and always has been a 'religious' institution unlike civil partnerships. Thereby when the religion in question forbids, even criminalizes, same sex encounters then it is not really tenable to justify one's choice by alluding to one's faith.
It is better to admit that the choice goes against Islam but the subject still adheres to the religion and that Allah will ultimately decide his or her fate than try and make the choice be 'Islamic'.
There's interpretation and then there's manipulation. In cases like this, it's fabrication.
