Nude Art

Even though art critics have left no real distinction between nude art and porn, for me personally, aesthetics divides the two. Nude Art is beautiful, or aims for beauty, or some other abstract quality and meaning. Porn, on the other hand, is simply ugly by virtue of its brute insistence on sexual gratification. The critic, having exiled beauty from art, brings more and more porn under its patronage, while the layman with a limited aesthetic sense, perceives more and more art to be porn.

You're right, but we should not forget that porn is also violence against women. It is so disgustingly, violently misogynistic that I would support legal measures against it, as I would against extreme racist and other kinds of hate speech.

Anyone who supports porn is a misogynist, end of story.

I don't see why, if the issue of being forced into it does not exist, prostitution and porn should be considered too much different from sports-all instances of people selling their bodies for money.

It's not just about exploitation. I feel that porn and prostitution actually changes the way men perceive women. Porn tends to reduce women to sex-objects, to a piece of flesh with three holes. I have witnessed the mentality of boys who watch too much porn; the image their mind has of women is not pretty. Much of porn is degrading for women. Of course, there can be porn that is not degrading, and this objection wouldn't apply to that. But much of porn that exists is degrading. I suppose you can say that the objection is not strictly against porn but the way it is practiced and consumed. Sports doesn't seem to have that 'reductive' effect in comparison. Sportsmen aren't reduced to anything less human, but women in porn and prostitution are in most of the cases. Of course, women have a right to engage by consent in something that degrades them. I wouldn't argue against the right, but I wouldn't approve of it.

The post only talked about aesthetics though, not ethics :)

Tehzib, do you have your own blog?

jm,

Nope, not anymore. The blog my name links to has posts by me, though. Generally my username appears as 'Butters' or 'Buttersisonlymyname', but here for some reason they use the blog's domain name as my username.

I know. :) I was just trying to put in the viewpoint of someone not too worried about aesthetics as such.
